england national football team prediciton for the world cup

Despite being regarded as the ‘birthplace of football’ and being home to the most exciting league in the world, England have fallen short over the years when it comes to winning major tournaments.

Except for once. But the memories of 1966 still echo throughout English football, six decades after captain Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup. Now, with a generation of talented, hard working players, they have as good a chance as ever to win the World Cup and restore national pride of the beautiful game.

England National Football Team: Tactics, Principles

Manager Gareth Southgate has built a team that’s based on balance and solidity. His favoured formation is a 4-2-3-1, with a back four supported by a double pivot, allowing the attacking players to express themselves. The attack is led by captain Harry Kane, with a supporting central attacking midfielder and two pacy wingers.

Over the years Southgate has sometimes switched to a 3-5-2 wingback formation, most notably against Italy in the final of Euro 2020. The rapid rise of two of the best wing backs in Europe, Chelsea pair Reece James and Ben Chillwell, suggests that this might be the favoured formation going forward.

The World Cup. PREDICTIONS & What to Expect?

Having come so close to their first trophy in almost sixty years, England will be hopeful that they can go one step further to actually win World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Southgate has a team of young players who are constantly improving, with a formidable blend of defensive maturity and attacking flair.

England national football team players: Top 5

Formations and strategy will certainly be important. Yet England’s success at the World Cup may well come down to the form of their star players come the winter of 2022.

Harry Kane

England’s talisman for so long, Harry Kane is one of the world’s most prolific goalscorers and key to England’s success. His finishing ability is second to none – it’s the reason he took home the golden boot at the World Cup in 2018.

Perhaps the biggest factor in England’s chances of winning the tournament is the fitness and form of their skipper. If he’s sluggish and short of confidence, England will find it hard to break down defences. If, on the other hand, he’s fit and firing, they’ll be confident of going all the way. (Read our Tottenham betting predictions – Kane’s current team.)

Jack Grealish

A firm fan favourite, winger Jack Grealish brings a whole host of tricks and unmatched dribbling skills. He’s yet to find his finest form for England, but as his game develops at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, Grealish will become an increasingly influential member of the England team.

Finding the right balance alongside the likes of Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho and Mason Mount will be key. But Grealish’s trickery and creativity will definitely be a valuable weapon for England come Qatar 2022. (Read our Man City betting predictions – Grealish’s current team.)

Reece James

England’s newest star, Reece James is developing into one of the best right wing backs in world football. Already a Champions League winner at the age of 21, James has got it all – power, skill, intelligence, pace and, to top it all off, devastating finishing ability. If Southgate decides to go with a wing back system to make the most of Reece James’s talents, he could well be one of the most influential players of the tournament.(Read our Chelsea FC betting predictions – James’ current team.)

Declan Rice

The unsung hero of their Euro 2020 campaign, Declan Rice is probably the main reason why England are now regarded as an excellent defensive side. His ability to guard the backline, while knitting the play together, has totally transformed the side, with a new found balance that makes England genuine contenders to win trophies. Meanwhile, his powerful running and ability to strike the ball from outside the area also make him a great outside bet to score goals. (Read our West Ham betting predictions – Rice’s current team.)

Raheem Sterling

The lightning fast winger was probably England’s standout performer at Euro 2020. More influential for the national team than he is for his club Manchester City, Sterling brings a level of experience that inspires his teammates. He’s a big game player too, always looking for the ball and always running at defences, with an uncanny ability to arrive in the box at just the right moment. Finding the right balance alongside the likes of Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho and Mason Mount will be key. But Grealish’s trickery and creativity will definitely be a valuable weapon for England come Qatar 2022. (Read our Man City betting odds – Sterling’s current team.)

Who is England’s football manager?

Gareth Southgate took the role back in 2016. He rose through the ranks of the national setup, progressing from head of elite development in 2011 to under 21 manager in 2013 and, finally, landing the top job in 2016.

It’s this steady rise to the top that’s helped Southgate build a strong foundation for the England national team. Many of the current players in the England team benefited from the changes he made to youth football back in 2011. Several of them played together for him in the under 21 team. It’s this kind of cohesion and stability that had been missing from the England team for so long and could very well lead them to success at the World Cup in 2022.
