The Italian National team is one of the most decorated national football teams in history. The Italian heritage goes way back in time. Some of the most legendary players in the world are Italian; the likes of Maldini, Del Piero, Cannavaro, Totti, Roberto Baggio, Pirlo, Nesta, Gattuso, and Gianluigi Buffon are only some. It’s no wonder then that the Italian national team has won 4 World Cups and 2 European Championships. Some of the most watched derbies as well are Italian Serie A derbies such as the Milan Derby between AC Milan and Inter Milan.
Italy National Team: Tactics & Principles
The current coach is world-renowned Italian manager Roberto Mancini. He fits into the Italian model perfectly; he’s Italian, has a proven record in silverware winning the Premier League with Manchester City for example, and finally, his style is Italian by nature. He ensures his team plays a pragmatic brand of football. Italy are compact and defend deep off the ball when they play top quality teams like France or Germany relying on the experience of Chiellini and Bonucci. They then try and counter attack with real speed thanks to the current crop of players like Chiesa and Insigne. It’s been effective on the international stage when they won the Euro 2020 (played in 2021).
Qualifying for the World Cup: Predictions & What to Expect
Italy have found themselves in a tough position following their success in the Euro 2020 where they were crowned champions for the 2nd time in their history. After some difficult results, especially a defeat to Switzerland, they now have to play 2 games that are must wins to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar. Should Italy beat North Macedonia which is expected at odds of 6/25 provided by Bet365, they then have to face the winner of Portugal vs Turkey, which many expect to be Portugal. The odds are slightly in Italy’s favour however, so place your bets wisely. (Click to read our latest World Cup Qualifying betting tips and predictions for today and tomorrow).
Italy National Team Players: Top 5
As always, Italy’s best players are usually some of the best in the world. Traditionally, Italian players tended to stay home and play in the Serie A when it was deemed as the top league in the world in the early 2000s. Now however, despite many of them still featuring in the Serie A, many are starting to venture abroad, playing in the Premier League and La Liga. Here our top 5 players from Italy.
Aged just 24, Federico Chiesa is one of the most talented up and coming forwards in the world. Currently on loan at Juventus, Chiesa grew his reputation in Fiorentina where he made 137 appearances. It’s at Juventus where he grew into his own though where he featured in the Champions League as well. His performances earned him call ups to the national team and his pace & direct style has caused opposition defenders problems. He now has 38 caps to his name and was one of the stars of the Euro 2020 competition. (Read our Juventus FC betting Predictions and Odds – Chiesa’s current team.)
Seen by many as Buffon’s heir, Donnarumma is well and truly on his way to achieve similar heights. He’s only 22 years old but already has over 200 Serie A appearances for AC Milan and 40 caps for the National Team. The highlight of his career so far would have been the successful Euro 2020 campaign. Now, he has to prove himself in the French Ligue 1 competing with Keylor Navas for top spot in Paris Saint Germain. He will however derive confidence from his impressive year in 2021 in which he was rewarded with the Yashin Trophy during the Ballon D’Or awards with several individual awards such as the Golden Boy Awards in 2019. Born and raised in Naples, Insigne is well and truly one of the Italian greats who showed loyalty throughout his career. He did spend 3 loan spells at other clubs where he scored 37 goals in 70 appearances for Pescara and Foggia before going back to his parent club. Ever since making his move back, he has scored 100+ goals in over 300 appearances in all competitions. He has also managed to get picked for the national side 53 times and scored 10 goals while at it.
Another Italian future star aged only 24, Nicolo Barella is a top talent in central midfield. He currently plays for Inter Milan and is a mainstay in their midfield. He started his career in Cagliari before a couple of loan moves eventually led him to the blue side of Milan. His performances have been impressive and earned him 35 caps for the national team, scoring 7 goals along the way. For a 24 year old to have won the Serie A in 2020/2021 and the Euro 2020 as well, he’s shaping up to be a reliable and talented central midfielder that we will have the pleasure of watching for years to come. (Read our Inter Milan betting predictions – Barella’s current team.)
Brazilian born, Jorginho moved to Italy aged 15. He is part Italian from his paternal side which earned him the nationality. He’s one of the few specialist holding midfielders known as a regista, in the world right now. Currently playing for Chelsea where he’s won the Champions League and Europa League already, and despite being a generally consistent performer for his club, it’s in the national team where he is most appreciated. His highlight of his career was winning the Euro 2020 with Italy as the nation’s captain. His performances even earned him a Ballon D’or Top 3 nomination, controversially ahead of the likes of Mo Salah, Mane, Cristiano Ronaldo and only behind Lewandowski and Messi. Who is Italy’s National Team Manager?
The Italian boss is former Sampdoria and Italian forward Roberto Mancini. Mancini made over 400 appearances, scoring over 130 goals and winning the Serie A in 1991. He was also voted as Italian Player of the Year in the 96/97 season. It’s as a manager though where his reputation as a master tactician has risen. 3 time Serie A winner with Inter Milan consecutively between 2005 and 2008, Copa Italia winner with Lazio, Fiorentina and Inter Milan, Mancini proved himself a title winning manager in Italy. He then made the move to the Premier League with Manchester City where he won them their first ever Premier League in the most dramatic fashion. He also won the FA Cup and got the ball rolling for Manchester City’s dominance in the modern era. Italy had struggled for years recently internationally but he’s now managed to bring back their tactically defensive identity, which saw him bring their first international trophy, the Euro 2020, back home for the first time since their last World Cup in 2006.
