portugal national football team prediciton for the world cup

Always among the regular favourites when it comes to winning International tournaments, Portugal have produced some of the world’s greatest footballers. Most recently, their team has been built around Cristiano Ronaldo – one of the all-time greats.

But CR7’s time is coming to an end. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar, providing Portugal qualify, will most likely be his last international tournament. Still, with a supporting cast of top class players, there’s a chance Ronaldo’s last appearance for Portugal on the world stage will end in glory.

Portugal National Football Team: Tactics, Principles

The Portuguese national team is blessed with plenty of talented players, particularly in attacking areas. The typical Portuguese style is based on technical ability, with a fluidy of play that encourages keeping possession of the ball, and a strong physical defence.

When playing against strong opposition, they like to play on the counter, as demonstrated to devastating effect in the first half of their Euro 2020 game against Germany.

Coach Fernando Santos prefers a 4-3-3 formation, with an experienced back four, three ball-playing central midfielders and three explosive forwards inter-changing in the final third.

Qualifying for the World Cup. PREDICTIONS & What to Expect?

Portugal slipped up late on in their World Cup qualifying campaigns with a 0-0 draw against the Republic of Ireland followed by a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Serbia. It leaves them needing to win two games in a double playoff in order to qualify for World Cup 2022.

Portuguese football fans would have been confident of their nation’s chances of qualifying; that is, until the draw was made. Because the Portuguese will have to take on Turkey in the semi-final, before facing North Macedonia or, more likely, European champions Italy, should they make it through to the final. Portugal national football team players: Top 5

Portugal has a wealth of talent in the national side, with a mix of experienced veterans and exciting young stars.

Cristiano Ronaldo

One of the all time great footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo is still, at the age of 37, one of the best goalscorers on the planet. If they qualify, the World Cup in Qatar could well be his last tournament for Portugal. It’s sure to be an emotional one for Ronaldo, who will be looking to bow out in style, by leading his country to their first ever World Cup triumph. Probably the most important Portuguese defender of his generation, Pepe is a huge presence for the Portugal defence. Since his debut in 2007, he’s amassed 123 caps, and was instrumental in Portugal’s Euro 2016, voted player of the match in their 1-0 win against France in the final. Known for his physical presence and tough tackling, when Pepe retires, he’ll leave some big boots to fill. (Read our FC Porto betting predictions – Pepe’s current team.)

André Silva

For years now, André Silva has been touted as ‘the next big thing’ in Portuguese football. But since leaving Porto back in 2017, he’s struggled to live up to the hype. That is, until the 2020/2021, when he tore up the Bundesliga, scoring 28 goals in 32 games. A great all-round striker who scores goals with both feet and his head, Silva is seen as the long term successor to Ronaldo. His goals could make the difference in qualifying for the World Cup and beyond.

João Félix

Speed, technique, dribbling, creativity and finishing – on his day, João Félix has got it all. The Atlético Madrid winger has a big part to play for Portugal. Although not a guaranteed starter, his energy and trickery is a very dangerous weapon, especially when it comes to unlocking defences late on in games. João Cancelo

Look up the word ‘versatile’ in the dictionary and you’ll probably find a picture of João Cancelo. Equally comfortable playing at right back or left back, or even in midfield, the Manchester City player has developed into one of the best attack-minded defenders in world football. Strong, fast, skillful and intelligent, with the ability to play the right ball at the right time, Cancelo will be a huge influence on the Portuguese national team for years to come. (Read our Manchester City betting predictions – Cancelo’s current team.)

Who is Portugal’s football manager?

The only manager to ever win a national tournament with Portugal, Fernando Santos has been in charge since 2014. He’s won 58 out of 95 games for Portugal, bringing plenty of attacking flair to the national side.

Santos also coached the Greece national team, leading them to their first ever knockout stage at the World Cup in 2014. As well as success at international level, Santos has managed Portugal’s ‘big three,’ winning five titles with Porto as well as having stints with Benfica and Sporting CP.
