Currently ranked 20th in the FIFA National Team World Rankings, the Swedish National Football team is a competitive side historically that has produced top talent in recent years. Of course, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the country’s greatest export in the football industry. With great supporting talent around him such as Emile Forsberg, Sweden never managed to win any major titles, despite consistently qualifying for the Euros and the World Cup. Sweden have had 12 appearances in the World Cup finishing runners up back in 1958 and 7 in the Euros, reaching the semi-finals in 1992.
Sweden National Football Team: Tactics & Principles
Based on their Euro 2020 exploits, Sweden’s coach, Janne Andersson likes to have his team play compact defensively when off the ball and expansive when on it. The team is usually set up in a 4-4-2 which can change depending on the moment of the game. When the Swedes have the ball, they tend to play into a 3-5-2 and try to play out from the back. They also resettle into a deep, classic 4-4-2 with real commitment and discipline. They also have some talented young forwards like Isak and Kulesevski who offer a variety of problems to opposition defenses, with pace, trickery and strength.
Sweden World Cup Qualification Odds: What to Expect

Sweden National Football Team Players: Top 5
There are a large number of Swedish pros around the world that play at the top level, and Sweden consistently had some players in the past who have played in the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga; Europe’s top 3 leagues. Here are our top 5 Swedes in the world of football:
The big Swede is also arguably the biggest Swedish star of all time. Having broken through the ranks at Malmo, Zlatan announced himself to Europe at Ajax before making his move to Italy. A true journeyman, Zlatan would go on to play for Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, Manchester United, LA Galaxy and then back to AC Milan. He’s won countless team and individual awards at club level but never managed to lead his national side too far in competitive tournaments. (Read our AC Milan betting predictions – Ibrahimovic’s current team.)
One of the hottest prospects in world football, Alexander Isak is one for the future. Currently playing his trade in Spain for Real Sociedad, he is blessed with useful height matched with power, pace and surprisingly good footwork when with the ball. Playing in the Spanish top flight is already speeding up his progress and he is quickly maturing into a reliable center-forward which Sweden will see as Zlatan’s heir. He is reportedly valued at 60-70 million pounds, a staggering fee for a youngster, but one which shows you how highly rated he is in the world of football.
One of the more experienced players in the squad at 30 years of age, he is an attacking midfielder that carries the creative responsibility of the Swedish National Team. He’s been a Bundesliga star ever since joining RB Leipzig in 2015, making 178 appearances for the Red Bull side, and getting capped 68 times for his country. (Read our RB Leipzig betting predictions – Forsberg’s current team.)
Victor Lindelof is one of Sweden’s finest center backs, playing for the biggest club in England, Manchester United. He was a signed for a significant fee after impressive, consistent performances for Benfica. He was also already representing his country at all the youth levels and continued representing his country at senior level, earning himself 50 caps. He’s not had a great time in England though with patches of inconsistent performances finding him out. He is a great defender on the ball though with some great range in his passing. (Read our Manchester United betting predictions – Lindelof’s current team.)
Another youngster, Dejan is a highly rated right-sided midfielder or winger who is making his mark in the Italian top flight Serie A. He moved to Atalanta in 2016 when he joined the academy and then kicked off his senior career in 2019. He then made his move to Juventus but with instability in Turin, he’s found himself at Parma on loan (twice) and his impressive performances have earned him 20 caps at such a young age which will boost his potential. (Read our Juventus FC betting predictions – Kulusevski’s current team.)
Who is Sweden’s National Team Manager?
Janne Andersson is an experience Swedish manager who has managed 3 Swedish top flight clubs most notably, IFK Norrköping, who he had the most success with during his 5 year stint from 2011 to 2016. He won the Swedish top league, Allsvenskan in 2015 and won coach of the year in 2015 and 2019. He currently has a 52.11% win rate, winning 37 of his 71 games in charge ever since he took over the national team in 2016, drawing 13 and losing 21. It’s a respectable record considering the overall quality of the national team but even he would admit that they could achieve more with what they have.
